What You Need to Know about Infant Oral Surgery.

If your baby is experiencing difficulties feeding due to tongue-tie or lip-tie, this article is for you! Sunshine Children's Dentistry is one of the pediatric dentist offices that can offer LightScalpel CO2 laser surgery for infants. Our office utilizes the latest CO2 laser technology from LightScalpel. Consider talking with one of our dentists, Dr. Fry or Dr. Bradley, about the Infant Laser Frenectomy procedure.

In the case of tongue-tie, a thin piece of tissue called Lingual Frenulum (which connects the underside of the tongue to the bottom of the mouth) may either be too tight or attach too far towards the tip of the tongue. This can restrict the tongue from full movement required to latch for milk, eat, and later speak. Similarly, the tissue called Labial Frenulum connected to the lips, if too tight, may be causing restriction known as lip-tie. However, these conditions can be treated.

Below is information about LightScalpel.

WHAT IS A LIGHTSCALPEL CO2 LASER? The LightScalpel CO2 Laser is a device that produces a concentrated beam of light. The highly focused CO2 laser beam vaporizes cleanly and precisely while sealing blood vessels at the same time. Our laser is so precise that we can selectively remove only a few cells at a time, if needed. At the same time, it is powerful enough to de-bulk large tumors.

BENEFIT = FASTER RECOVERY. Reduced trauma, minimal to no bleeding, and less swelling and discomfort mean the infant can breastfeed immediately after the procedure.

BENEFIT = REDUCED RISK OF INFECTION. The sanitizing effect of the laser minimizes the risk of infection and means faster healing.

BENEFIT = SHORTENED PROCEDURE TIME. Less bleeding ensures the improved visibility of the treatment area. This helps to minimize the duration of the procedure.

Talk to Sunshine Children's Dentistry. It is important to establish good oral health for your baby even before his/her first birthday. Although an infant doesn't usually grow teeth until 5-6 months old, there are circumstances where even newborns need oral procedures to assist with feeding or development. We can care for all children, from newborn and beyond. Our pediatric dentistry is trusted by doctors throughout the region.
